New city rail station at the Cologne Zoo by Rübsamen + Partner Architects BDA Engineers
After Rübsamen + Partner’s design, the rail station Zoo/Flora was realized and finally resolved the previously unsatisfactory situation. Although the zoo is the second largest visitor attraction (right after the cathedral), its old stop near the zoo and the botanical garden was located above ground, but beyond outdated and not even accessible.

By architects Rübsamen + Partners, Bochum, Cologne was the construction of the light rail station Zoo / Flora realized and artistically for years as transport links unsatisfactory state ended. Although the Zoo is the second largest after the cathedral visitor attraction in the city, was the stop for the Zoo and Botanical Garden – located above ground before the dive underground towards the cathedral – removed previously not even accessible, outdated the structural substance beyond. Been neglected so far as the Urban design as orientation and identity-giving role as the stop destination for the zoo and within a heterogeneous urban environment.

Functional Character

Based on a concept of the city of Cologne to accessible development Rübsamen + Partners therefore realized a new building, the high functionality with a distinctive design combines both constructive logic. Basic was a holistic formal setting, which defines a new bridge structure and the platforms as an architectural unity underlined by a continuous materiality. A clear gesture of free swinging across the tracks as the platform roof correlation contrasts with the curved also guided the railroad bridge. A key criterion for the design was that thus could be omitted additional technical complexity such as elevator or escalator.

Steel Structure as a Design Principle Imaging

For formative formative principle of the draft raises the steel structure itself, whose inner logic and aesthetics forward occurs. So the curved ramp of the transfer track of a V-shaped, welded steel structure was manufactured. The height of the steel bridge is about 90 inches to top of cap, the total width of meters around the third The formal counterpart forms the arch of the platform roof, the structure was designed as a visible, multiple oppositely curved tubular steel truss construction, which is mounted on the clamped steel props. The track crossing the roof is free of supports. The structure was a skin on the upper side of powder-coated aluminum sheet and underside of powder-coated metal mesh frame. Logic and materiality of the construction set, meanwhile, continued in the other details. Thus, the railing and the glass wall were from a continuous cycle of 100 mm wide flat steel formed, glass wall and light stacks develop vertically from the banister and genuine part of the overall design.

Mark within the Urban Texture

The great shape and the rational language, which continues to the details such as railings and structural, give the station a simple sign character, the evening is highlighted by a subdued light scenario, the two dominant elements. At the same time the design is reacting to the fact that the structure of the surrounding buildings and from the nearby zoo bridge is visible from above. Deliberately avoiding creative mannerisms liked the new building not only a piece of traffic engineering infrastructure, but as a point of arrival at the zoo and flora within the difficult context of urban planning an urban place.
